A Holistic Approach to Competitive Swimming
The ability to maintain peak form throughout an entire race - is the key to peak performance. Watch any great swimmer compete and you will notice that their form remains constant from beginning to end. At Peak Performance Swim Camp we believe the secret to peak form lies in the approach - namely a holistic approach combining mental, physical and technical conditioning.
At first glance, one might wonder what mental conditioning has to do with peak form development. But if one considers the typical training environment - countless laps, crowded pool conditions and high swimmer to coach ratios it underscores the need to condition key mental skills - such as focus, resourcefulness and self-motivation.
When it comes to peak form development the need for physical and technical conditioning is obvious. From a physical perspective a swimmer must possess the essential three - strength, flexibility and endurance. From a technical perspective a swimmer must develop the right feel for the water and correct motor skills.
At Peak Performance Swim Camp we offer three holistic swim camps: an Elite Training Camp, an Advanced Training Camp and a 10 & Under Mini-Camp. Each curriculum offers a unique blend of mental, physical and technical conditioning. The Elite Training Camp consists of 75% physical conditioning and 25% technical conditioning; the Advanced Training Camp consists of 50% physical conditioning and 50% technical conditioning and the 10 & Under Mini-Camp consists of 25% physical conditioning and 75% technical conditioning. And of course, mental conditioning is predominately featured in all three camps.
A Coach With a Vision
Former Olympic Coach Nick Baker founded Peak Performance Swim Camp in 1996. His vision was to create a holistic swim camp that would maximize individual swimming potential and meet the needs of competitive swimmers of all levels - novice to world class. Over the past 13 years, thousands of swimmers have participated in a Peak Performance Swim Camp. Coach Baker is also an avid globetrotter having conducted swim camps throughout North and South America, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Caribbean.
Smaller is Better
At Peak Performance Swim Camp enrollment is limited to ensure a low swimmer to coach ratio. We maintain a 6:1 ratio in our Elite Training Camp and an 8:1 ratio in both our Advanced Training Camp and 10 & Under Mini-Camp.
Swim Positive Philosophy
In brief, it is a philosophy that took root in 1972 - year one of Coach Baker's professional coaching career. It is based on three primary objectives:
- 1) To train swimmers holistically - combining mental, physical and technical conditioning
- 2) To instill a positive self-image within every swimmer
- 3) To create a positive, stimulating and challenging training environment
The SP Philosophy forms the philosophical foundation of Peak Performance Swim Camp.
Upon arrival to camp, swimmers receive a Swim Positive wristband and are encouraged to wear it throughout their stay. The wristband serves as a constant reminder of the SP objectives.
